Toxic effects of paraffin candles-there is an alternative
by Debra Ferrie
Do you still burn paraffin candles? Paraffin is a derivative of petroleum. When burned they release carcinogenic toxins such as benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and soot into the air. The emissions from paraffin candles contain many of the same toxins produced by burning diesel fuel. Imagine that? NOT what I want to be burning around my baby and small children! Or myself for that matter.
Scented candles can also trigger allergic reactions. The symptoms include itchy and watery eyes, sore throat, blocked nasal passages, headaches, hives, skin irritations and asthma-like conditions. People with asthma and respiratory allergies may experience more severe reactions.
Gel candles are also petroleum-based and the glass containers can shatter from excessive heat. Great! They can emit the same toxins as paraffin candles.
Now, the Safer, natural, healthier alternative to paraffin based candles:
Ta-da!!Soy candles! Which generally last 50% longer than petroleum-based candles. Soy candles burn slower, and cooler, are non-toxic, less likely to trigger allergies, clean up so easily with soap and water, and produce very little soot. This definately makes them more animal and child-friendly. I'm living it since I juts love my house when candles are lit! It totally transforms the ambience; winter, summer, spring or fall. Night or day.
Beeswax is returning to popularity. Beeswax is less likely to trigger allergies. It generally does not produce toxins or soot when burned. It tends to be more expensive than paraffin candles but also burns longer. Our candles are a soy/veg/beeswax blend, reasonably priced and intoxicating aromas! see more at http://www.miabellanaturals.com/ and visit my blog for articles, compnay infor, insight, wisond, and more.http://www.miabellanaturals.blogspot.com/
